Description of Significance CONSTRUCTED IN 1936, THIS GYM/AUDITORIUM SERVED NOT ONLY THE EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY, BUT ITS CONSTRUCTION SERVED TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT WAGES TO UNEMPLOYED WORKERS IN THIS COAL MINING AREA. COAL COUNTY WAS HARD HIT BY THE DEPRESSION AND UNEMPLOYMENT WAS RAMPANT; WPA PROJECTS SUCH AS THIS WERE AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE ECONOMY OF THE AREA IN THE 1930S. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 9/8/88.
